Wormit Fishery Report – 05/02: Back in Play & 11lb Brownie

Summary

After a quiet month dictated by high water and colour, Wormit is properly back in play. Water levels have dropped, clarity is improving daily, and stock levels are excellent following a significant input of 300 fish last week.

While the Scottish Men’s Team fundraiser faced challenging conditions, Sunday’s returns confirmed that the fish are there and feeding well for those willing to adapt. We are also issuing an important notice regarding peg etiquette in this report—please read it.

Weather Outlook

Friday 6 February – Sunday 8 February
(Tayside & Fife – Wormit area)

A generally unsettled but mild weekend lies ahead. Low pressure dominates, keeping things breezy with some rain, but temperatures remain comfortably above freezing.

  • Friday 6 Feb: 5°C / 3°C – Breezy with snow showers likely turning to light rain. Wind East 19mph.
    Sunrise 07:58 | Sunset 16:55 | Pressure: ~995 hPa (Low)
  • Saturday 7 Feb: 7°C / 5°C – Overcast with light rain throughout the day. Milder feel.
    Sunrise 07:56 | Sunset 16:57 | Pressure: ~994 hPa (Steady Low)
  • Sunday 8 Feb: 7°C / 5°C – Staying mild with light rain and overcast skies.
    Sunrise 07:54 | Sunset 17:00 | Pressure: ~993 hPa (Falling)

Owner’s Advice

Keep on the move.
The fish are active, so do not sit on one spot all day. If you haven’t had a pull in 20 minutes, move a few pegs and cover fresh water.

Recommended Setups:

  • Fast Glass & Snakes: This is provoking aggressive takes when fished with intent.
  • Washing Line: Still highly effective. Fish Diawl Bachs and Cormorants on the droppers to pick up fish feeding on naturals.
  • Bung Fishing: A pink egg fished approximately 3ft under the bung is picking up the fish that are holding station.

Catch Highlights

Sunday Catch Returns
Sunday saw nine rods out with a marked improvement in sport.

  • Jim Lang: 12 fish, including a superb 11lb+ brown trout. Fish came steadily all day, proving consistent sport. (See images below)
  • Fred Macdonald: 8 fish, landing six in the final hour after a tactical switch.
  • Ewan Richardson: 7 fish, caught by moving methodically.

Scottish Men’s Team Fundraiser (Saturday)
A tough day with cold south-easterly winds and coloured water.

  • 1st: Mark Tweedy (3 fish)
  • 2nd: Bruno (3 fish + 1 snapped rod)
  • 3rd: Scott Robertson (2 fish)

IMPORTANT: Peg Movement & Etiquette

Wormit operates a 12-rod maximum specifically to guarantee space. The system only works if anglers use that space.

Recently, we have seen too many anglers “camping” on holding fish for extended periods. This blocks productive water and causes avoidable friction. Polite guidance has unfortunately not been enough to ensure fairness.

What this means:

  1. Change is coming: We will shortly introduce a formal peg movement rule to remove ambiguity.
  2. Current expectation: If you have been catching for a few hours, move. Do not sit in one spot all day.
  3. Standards: We are not a commercial (ram as many anglers in as you can) type fishery. We expect anglers to self-police and share the water fairly.

Litter & Handling
A few disappointing issues arose this weekend:

  • Rubbish: Coffee cups and cigarette ends were left on the bank. There are no bins on the pegs intentionally. Take your rubbish home or use the car park bin.
  • Fish Care: A dead fish was found showing signs of poor handling. Keep them wet, handle them with care, and release them quickly.

Stocking Update

  • Last Week: ~300 fish added to a strong resident head.
  • Next Week: A further stocking of quality fish (3.5lb+) is scheduled. We delayed this slightly to allow water clarity to improve further, but there is no shortage of stock in the water right now.

Call to Action

The fishery is moving firmly in the right direction as we head towards spring. Clarity is returning, the stock is solid, and the water is fishing well for thinking anglers.

Extended Daylight: With sunrise now before 8am and sunset touching 5pm, you have a solid window of daylight to enjoy. Make the most of it.

A quick reminder that banks remain soft, so wellies are essential.
