Wormit Fishery Report – 18/11

Winter has arrived at Wormit, but the fishing remains remarkably consistent. This is where we see the benefit of restricted number with low pressure on the fish.

Despite the sharp drop in air temperature and the first proper frosts of the season, the rod average holds at a highly respectable 7.2 fish per rod. The challenge has shifted from selective feeding on naturals to proper winter presentation — slowing everything down and fishing the right depth. Those who adapted to static methods under the bung enjoyed excellent sport, with quality fish in the 6–7lb class landed throughout the week.

The water is running at perfect height with excellent clarity and just enough colour to give the trout confidence. Fish remain active in the margins — several anglers reported takes within a rod’s length of the bank, watching trout circle flies like vultures before committing. Depth control is now critical: 2–3ft appears to be the sweet spot, though Scott Pozzi proved that fishing deeper (around 6ft) can also be devastatingly effective.

📌 Summary (Read This First)

  • Rod average: 7.2 fish per rod
  • Top range: Quality fish in the 6–7lb class landed consistently
  • Best rods: Lee Chisholm (12 fish), Scott Pozzi (12 fish), Your Truly (15 fish)
  • Key condition: Water cold and clear with a slight tinge; fish holding deep and reluctant to chase
  • Key method: Static presentation under the bung — pink and white eggs dominating. Snakes worth trying but fish them slower and deeper
  • Active period: Fish still fairly active in the afternoon when the day is at its warmest
  • Major announcement: The Wormit Shield – Scotland’s newest stillwater open championship launches Boxing Day 2025

🌤 Weather & Water Conditions

The mild autumn weather has departed and proper winter conditions have set in. The outlook remains cold and wintry, demanding heavier gear and warm clothing. However, the drop in temperature often concentrates fish and simplifies fly choice — a silver lining for those prepared to brave the elements.

Day Conditions (High/Low) Wind Sunrise / Sunset
Wed 20 Nov Partly sunny / Mostly cloudy (4°C / -1°C) Gentle NW (9 mph) 08:00 / 15:52
Thu 21 Nov Cloudy, wintry showers (4°C / -2°C) Gentle SW (9 mph) 08:02 / 15:51
Fri 22 Nov Cloud, light rain/snow (7°C / 3°C) Light SW (5 mph) 08:04 / 15:50
Sat 23 Nov Light rain, snow showers (6°C / 3°C) Moderate east (9 mph) 08:06 / 15:48
Sun 24 Nov Cloudy with bright spells (5°C / 2°C) Light SE (7 mph) 08:08 / 15:47

Barometric pressure: The week begins with high, stable pressure during the clear, cold spells. Expect this to ease and drop towards the weekend as the wind swings south-west and the rain/snow mix moves in — conditions that often trigger more aggressive afternoon takes.

Water condition: Excellent clarity maintained throughout. Crucially, we are not expecting freezing conditions at Wormit due to the low altitude and estuary proximity, meaning fishing remains open when other venues may be locked solid. Water temperature holding around 8–10°C — cold enough to slow the fish but not enough to shut them down entirely.

🎣 Reported Catch Highlights

Consistency rewarded anglers who stuck with the static method and fished into the wind. The quality of fish remains exceptional, with most anglers commenting on the condition and fighting power of even the smaller residents.

  • Lee Chisholm: A brave soul fishing in what he described as “absolutely horrible” wind and rain, Lee still managed 12 fish. His tactic was simple and effective: pink egg 2.5ft under the bung, fishing the east side of the loch. Consistent and reliable as always.
  • Scott Pozzi: 12 fish using varied methods throughout the day. Scott experimented with depth and proved that fishing deeper (around 6ft) can be deadly when others are struggling. Always one to nail the method on the day.
  • Scott Doig: Landed 8 fish in a sharp 4-hour session, with the majority being 3–5lb specimens, including a feisty 2lb blue trout. Scott used an intermediate line, pulling and twitching drab lures with authority. He noted losing 4 fish and missing half a dozen besides — a sign of how aggressive the takes can be even in cold water.
  • The Giacchetto Brothers: A solid combined haul of 10–12 fish between them. Consistent performers who understand Wormit’s moods.
  • David Anderson: 7 fish in what were genuinely difficult conditions. A respectable result when many would have packed up early.
  • Yours Truly: Managed 15 fish over a focused 4-hour session. The majority came on pink eggs under the bung at 2–3ft, with around 8 fish taken within leader-length of the bank. “I was literally watching fish swim around my fly like vultures before they grabbed it — proper visual, edge-of-your-seat fishing.”

The key observation this week is that fish are reluctant to chase aggressively due to colder water temperatures. Consistency, patience, and precise depth control are now paramount. This is proper winter fishing — methodical, technical, and hugely rewarding when you get it right.

Daytime Tactics

Static bung rigs are now the dominant method. Fish are sitting mostly at 2–3ft depth, though they do move up and down throughout the day in response to temperature and light levels. The critical principle: change your depth before you change your flies (provided you’re fishing tried-and-tested patterns, of course).

Presentation: Cover the margins systematically and keep on the move. Don’t rush to cast far — fish are feeding confidently close in, especially during the warmer afternoon period. Waiting for the subtle take is essential; winter fish don’t smash the fly like summer stock — they sip, mouth, and move off slowly. Watch your indicator like a hawk.

Alternative approach: When there’s a ripple on the water, slow-retrieved intermediate lines with drab or dark lures, twitched methodically, have accounted for good bags. This is a backup method for when static presentation isn’t producing — but right now, the bung is king.

Flies That Worked This Week

  • Pink eggs — Best static fly of the week, fished shallow at 2–3ft
  • White eggs — Equally effective when pink loses its edge
  • Black Mamba — Effective under the bung, particularly in brighter spells
  • Hot-head damsels — Twitched slowly on an intermediate line
  • Orange mops — Fished deep (around 6ft) under indicator, as proven by Scott Pozzi
  • Snakes (black/olive) — Worth trying, but fish them significantly slower and deeper than you would in warmer months

💡 Angler Reminders & Etiquette

Booking is essential: We have introduced new signage to reinforce that all fishing must be booked and paid online before you start. This is critical to maintain our 12-rod daily limit and preserve the quality of the fishing experience. Do not just turn up — please call 07727 360428 if you cannot book online. We would hate to turn you away once the limited spots are filled.

Fish care: Barbless or debarbed hooks only. Keep fish wet at all times, handle with care, and release quickly. Photographs in the net are always preferred to lifting fish out of the water.

Grounds and maintenance updates:

  • Watch the far bank as it can become soft in high water. The opposite bank is being actively improved with drainage and reinforcement work.
  • The area to the far side of the hut is about to be cleared and gravelled, creating a new BBQ and patio area for summer relaxation, plus a dedicated dining area for corporate days, team-building events, and club bookings.
  • We are also looking into replacing the small footbridge to improve access and safety.
  • Please watch the stairs to the hut when entering — they can be extremely slippery when wet and frosty. Take your time and use the handrail.
