Wormit Trout Fishery is managed to provide quality stillwater fly fishing on a six-acre water near St Andrews and Dundee. Our stocking focuses on healthy, hard-fighting trout suited to the conditions, with careful attention given to water quality, fish welfare and angling pressure.

The fishery is best known for strong rainbow trout, occasional larger fish, and brown trout that add character and interest to the water. At different times, anglers may also encounter blue trout or tiger trout depending on stocking and fishery management decisions.

Fish care is central to how Wormit is run. We keep rod numbers controlled, expect sensible tackle, require careful handling and operate clear release rules for brown trout and larger fish.

The Mainstay of Stillwater Sport

Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout are the mainstay of the fishing at Wormit. They are strong, adaptable stillwater fish that feed confidently on aquatic insects, terrestrial food, fry and a wide range of fly patterns depending on conditions.

On the right day, rainbows at Wormit can be seen moving confidently through the clear water, taking buzzers, nymphs, dries, lures and natural imitations. Their willingness to take a fly, combined with their fighting ability, makes them a reliable and exciting species for both experienced anglers and hosted beginners.

Typical Wormit approach:

Regular stocking with quality rainbow trout suited to the water.
Strong average stamp, with occasional larger fish present.
Best sport often comes from reading conditions and matching the hatch.
Rainbow trout under 5lb may be retained only where the correct fish option has been booked.
Large trout should be returned carefully unless otherwise agreed by the fishery.

A Classic Trout with Real Character

Brown Trout

Brown trout bring a different character to the fishery. They are often more cautious, more selective and more associated with natural feeding patterns, which makes them especially rewarding when they are caught on the right fly at the right moment.

Brown trout are part of the character of Wormit and are treated as a fish to be protected. They add variety, interest and a more traditional feel to the water, particularly for anglers who enjoy nymphs, buzzers, dries and careful presentation.

Brown trout policy:

All brown trout must be returned carefully.
Wet hands and in-water unhooking should be used wherever possible.
Photographs should be quick, low and over the net.
Brown trout are not included in retained fish options.

A Striking Rainbow Variant

Blue Trout

Blue trout are a colour variant of rainbow trout and can occasionally feature in stillwater stocking. They offer the same energetic fight as rainbow trout, with a distinctive pale or blue-silver appearance that makes them stand out in clear water.

At Wormit, blue trout should be treated with the same care as rainbows. They are part of the wider stillwater sport and, when present, add variety for anglers without changing the core fishing style.

An Unusual Stillwater Fish

Tiger Trout

Tiger trout are a hybrid between brown trout and brook trout. They are sterile, visually striking and known for their aggressive takes and distinctive markings. When present in the fishery, they are a memorable catch and always attract interest from experienced stillwater anglers.

Tiger trout are not treated as a fish for the table at Wormit. Their value is in the sport, variety and interest they bring to the water.

Tiger trout policy:

All tiger trout must be returned carefully.
Use wet hands and keep handling to an absolute minimum.
Do not retain tiger trout under any permit type.
Fish should be recovered fully before release.

Stocking, Conservation and Fish Welfare

How We Manage Fish Stocks

Fish stocking at Wormit is managed around water quality, angling pressure, seasonal conditions and the long-term health of the fishery. The aim is not simply to put fish in the water; it is to maintain sport, welfare and balance across the season.

Rod numbers are deliberately controlled so the water is not over-pressured. Catch-and-release fishing is supported by clear fish care rules, sensible tackle requirements and mandatory release of brown trout and larger fish.

Our approach includes:

Regular assessment of fish behaviour, catch returns and water conditions.
Stocking decisions based on season, water temperature and fishery pressure.
Clear catch-and-release rules to protect larger and more sensitive fish.
Careful weed and water management carried out by the fishery.
Education around wet handling, in-water release and sensible tackle.

Good trout fishing relies on more than stocking. It depends on water quality, angler behaviour, responsible management and a bit of weather that behaves itself, which is often the least reliable member of the team.
