Wormit Fishery Report – Spring Has Switched On

Spring has properly arrived at Wormit, and the loch is fishing as well as it has at any point this season. Water temperature is sitting at a lovely 10°C, clarity is excellent, fish are active right across the water, and the evening rise is now producing some genuinely outstanding sport. If you have been meaning to get out this month, this week is a very good reason to stop putting it off.

Buzzers are hatching with increasing regularity, and the result is exactly what you would hope for, fish moving confidently, rising freely, and responding to well-presented flies throughout the day and into the last light. The rod average is currently sitting at a healthy 7 to 8 fish, with an average weight of around 3lb. We are also seeing some fine browns in the mix, which always adds a bit of quality and character to a day’s sport.

Weather and Water Conditions

Conditions this week are classic early April for Fife, a mix of crisp, bright spells, the odd passing shower, and variable winds. The north-westerly airflow mid-week settles through the period, with lighter conditions building by the weekend. Not the warmest April we have ever seen, but absolutely fishable throughout, and the cooler overnight temperatures are keeping the water in excellent shape.

On a clear day this week, you have a fishing window of close to 14 hours on a single permit. The morning and evening slots are currently the standout periods, but fish are feeding consistently enough through the middle of the day that there is no wasted time on the water.

Catch Highlights

Catch returns have been a bit limited this week, but the reports that have come in have been very encouraging. Scott Fraser returned 12 fish, Gilbert Thimblemore had 10 in a 4-hour session, and Chad Rodgers reported 6. Plenty of other fish are being caught as well, but not everyone has sent full returns in.

Even allowing for that, the overall picture remains very positive, with rod averages around 7 to 8 fish and average size around 3lb.

The notable highlight of recent sessions has been the number of browns coming to the net. They are showing in pleasing numbers and in fine condition, which adds real quality to the sport and is well worth taking advantage of while they are on the go.

Best Tactics and Flies

The fishing has already shown a bit of shift from one day to the next, which is typical of spring and a good sign that the season is properly in motion. It pays to stay flexible and fish what is in front of you, but the patterns below are producing consistently and are a solid starting point.

Daytime tactics:

Eggs and FABs are leading through the day, with yellow, salmon pink, and biscuit all producing well
Washing line setups are highly effective, with a buoyant point fly and nymphs or Diawl Bachs on the droppers
Keep the retrieve slow, a figure-of-eight or just enough tension to stay in touch is often enough
On brighter or calmer periods, fish can drift high in the water and become visible, so pay attention before casting blindly

Evening tactics:

Simple black buzzers are the standout pattern once fish begin to show
Suspender buzzer or straight-line methods both work well
Static or near-static presentation is critical, let the fish find the fly
Dry fly is worth having ready, particularly when fish are up in the film and refusing sub-surface patterns

The evening rise at Wormit right now is as good as it gets. Fish are moving, buzzers are hatching, and the surface activity in the last couple of hours of light is proper. It is not always easy fishing, these fish can be frustrating when they are up and selective, but that is exactly what makes it rewarding when you get it right.

Stocking, Water Management and Grounds

The fishery is in excellent condition heading deeper into spring, and things are coming together nicely both on the water and around the banks.

Weed growth: Fully under control. The lake shade is doing exactly the job it is meant to do, keeping presentation areas clean and fishable
Water clarity: Gin clear at 10°C, excellent visibility and ideal for active fish
Grounds: The first partial grass cut of the season has been completed, and we are working progressively through the rest as needed
General condition: The fishery is beginning to look properly spring-like again, tidy, fresh, and very fishable
Stock: The loch is producing a healthy mix of rainbows, blues, and browns in excellent condition

Angler Reminders

Barbless or de-barbed hooks only, non-negotiable
Fish care matters, keep fish wet, use a knotless net, minimise handling, and return fish quickly
Photos in the net are preferred over lifted trophy shots
Peg rotation: after 6 fish or 90 minutes on a peg, please move and skip the next peg before returning later
Litter: take it home or use the bin in the car park
Discarded nylon: do not leave line on the bank or in the water, it is dangerous to wildlife and completely avoidable
Pre-booking is required, no walk-ins accepted

A Note on Our Permit Model

We continue to receive enquiries asking about two-hour or four-hour sessions, so it is worth being clear about how we operate and why.

Wormit Trout Fishery runs on a single permit model. You buy one permit and fish from dawn through to dusk, that is currently close to 14 hours on the water. There are no short sessions, no split-day tickets, and no hourly options.

The reason is straightforward. Short session ticketing is difficult to manage fairly on a water of this size, it leads to overcrowding at predictable peak times, and it undermines the experience for everyone else on the bank. Our model is deliberately designed to avoid those problems. It keeps the fishery calm, spacious, and enjoyable, which is rather the point.

We are a six-acre loch, capped at 12 rods. That ratio of space to angler is what makes Wormit different from a conventional commercial fishery, and we intend to keep it that way.

If you are looking purely for the cheapest possible couple of hours of fishing, there are plenty of fisheries that cater for that. If you want space, quality stock, clear water, active fish, and a fishery that still feels civilised, this is the right place and this is the model.
