Weekly Summary & Tactics
This week’s message is simple: if you want to catch fish right now, fish smart. Early mornings, and evening sessions are delivering the goods, and there’s been no shortage of bow waves and fish feeding hard in the margins.
At this stage of the season, trout are often locked onto tiny terrestrials and caenis—feeding with precision. Trying to “match the hatch” can feel like throwing a pebble into the ocean. Instead, you need two gears: subtlety for when they’re sipping, and aggression for when you want to provoke a reaction.
🎯 My Setup
- Lines: Full floater or 3ft midge tip.
- Leader: 12–15ft (6ft to top dropper, 3ft between droppers).
- Flies: Size 14 Hares Ears, Crunchers, Diawl Bachs. On the point: Olive or Black FAB, or a Midge Gem FAB (size 12), fished almost static.
- Retrieve: Dead slow—just stay in touch with the line.
- Tippet: 7.5lb Grand Max or equivalent diameter.
- Rod: 5 or 6-weight for finesse and fewer breakages.
💡 Clock-Face Approach: Cover the water methodically. Fish 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock, six casts each way, then adjust or move.
💡 White Cat Tip: When fish are pinned on microscopic food at dawn or dusk, tie on a single unweighted White Cat (or even a Booby). Cast long, rip it fast, and make it wake—especially in a ripple, your looking to provoke a chase.

Cooler nights and a steady breeze will keep the fish switched on and feeding comfortably.

- Weed: Minimal—just a few mats left intentionally. These are snail hotels, and the trout know it.
🎣 Fish Care: Barbless hooks only. Use a disgorger. Keep fish wet and in the net for photos. Zero losses last week—let’s keep that run going.
