Wormit Fishery Report – 16/12

Strong rod averages, quality fish to 10lb, and ideal winter conditions as the water continues to clear.

Last week saw a short period of high water, and we made the call to keep the fishery closed until Friday to allow conditions to settle properly. That patience paid off.

A quality stocking went in on Thursday, with fish averaging 3.5lb, plus a handful of larger fish mixed through, including some excellent brown trout. Water levels are now back to normal height, and clarity is improving by the day as both top burns are running crystal clear.

Despite the rainfall, the loch has carried far less colour than expected, and it is fishing extremely well.

  • Rod Average: approx. 7.5 fish per rod per session
  • Average Fish Size: a comfortable 3lb+

🏆 Catch Highlights

It’s been a very strong week across the board, with steady sport and some standout performances.

Top Rod:

  • Sandy McAllan (Arbroath)20 fish, fishing sink-tip lines with small black Cormorants, very slow retrieves.

Notable Catches:

  • Alan Smith (Dundee) – cracking 10lb brown trout
  • Scott Pozzi – 11 fish
  • Steven Ross – 9 fish
  • David Anderson – 6 fish
  • Chris Kirk – 5 fish
  • Lee Chisholm – 4 fish (3 hours)

🎣 Angler Comments – Scott Pozzi

Scott summed the conditions up perfectly after landing 11 fish:

“Weather was perfect, dry, overcast and 8 degrees. Water slightly coloured but I’ve fished it in a lot worse. Lots of fish rising at full casting distance. Heaviest was an 8lb rainbow. 6 on black buzzers, 5 on the bung with black stalking bugs set at 1 foot. Very happy with a cracking day!”

🪰 Best Tactics & Where to Fish

Wormit continues to fish very well with a slight tinge of colour in the water.

Tactics:

  • Small black flies are excelling
  • Black Cormorants, buzzers, stalking bugs
  • Sink-tip or intermediate lines
  • Fish slowly, the catches this week speak for themselves

Where to Focus:

  • Burn mouth area holding good numbers of fish
  • Fish are well spread out, so be prepared to move
  • The Lagoon continues to fish consistently, particularly when anglers stay mobile
