Surface Action & Autumn Sport
Autumn fishing in full swing. Following on from last week’s double stocking (on top of another double stocking two weeks prior), the fishery is carrying an enormous head of fish. Sport has been steady and exciting, but it’s not a “gimme” — some rods have found it challenging while others, familiar with the water and tactics, have been hitting excellent numbers.
Those fishing a mixture of bung tactics and pulling patterns (notably hot-head damsels) have scored well. I can vouch for that myself after a few hours on the water this week. On calmer days, top-of-the-water sport has dominated, especially in the last few hours of light. Tonight alone, size 14 Shipman’s buzzers nailed fish after fish — I landed 7, lost 3, and had countless follows when pulling earlier in the evening in only a few hours. Fishery management continues to actively clip back any weed patches; it’s not an issue, just routine maintenance, and when we get a breeze, clumps are cleared out. Water temperature is holding cool at 15 °C and the fish are incredibly active.

- Catch stats: Steady sport, catch averages around 6–7 fish/rod with fish from 2 lb right through to 8.5 lb landed, Browns included.
- Best windows: dawn until early afternoon, and the last few hours before dark.
- Top tactics: Shipman’s buzzers (#14), hot-head damsels pulled, bung with eggs and squirmies, and washing-line with Diawl Bachs.
- Weed & water: actively managed, only light natural pondweed present; water sitting at 15 °C and crystal clear.
- Seasonal outlook: September into November is prime time — evenings are shortening, so get those last sessions in before they cease.
- Tigers: Some serious beasts have been sourced and will be resident at Wormit in the coming weeks.

- Dave Simpson – netted 12, dropped a few, with plenty in the 4–6 lb bracket.

💡 Owner’s Advice
- Match conditions: when it’s calm, fish the surface film with Shipman’s buzzers and CDC emergers. When there’s breeze, switch to pulling damsels or bung tactics.
- Keep mobile: cover water and change tactics as needed — the fish are there, give them what they want.
- Fish care: barbless/de-barbed hooks only; keep fish wet; quick unhooking and photos in the net.
