Wormit Fishery Report – 10/03
What an opening week. The 2026 peak season launched in style at Wormit, with anglers rewarded from day one. Strong numbers right across the board, quality fish in superb condition, and a genuine mix of species showing throughout. The loch is sitting at a lovely height, clarity is perfect, and with over 20 free pegs available at any given time, there is space to fish properly and fish well.
How it fished: The week started with a bang on opening day, and the momentum barely let up. Fish were spread right across the loch, with the far bank along the field, the lagoon, burnmouth area and pegs 4-7 all producing. Even when overnight rain pushed colour through the system mid-week, anglers who adapted their approach still found fish. By the weekend, the water had cleared again and sport picked right back up. Surface activity has been consistent throughout, with trout visibly moving in most sessions.
Summary (Read This First)
- Rod average: approximately 8 fish per rod across the week; fish to 8.5 lb landed.
- Species mix: rainbows from 2-5 lb, blues showing well, and some cracking brown trout to 8.5 lb with others at 3-4 lb.
- Best windows: early morning through to early afternoon, and the final 90 minutes of light.
- Conditions: water at a lovely height, clarity now perfect after brief mid-week colour. Plenty of surface activity throughout.
- Top flies: blue flash damsel, FABs, yellow owl, Kate McLaren, cormorants, black snakes, black buzzers with silver rib.
- Space: with a maximum of 12 rods on 6 acres, there are 20+ free pegs at any one time. No queuing, no combat fishing.
Standout Tactics
- Blue flash and hothead damsels have been the standout pattern of the week, accounting for fish in every session and in all conditions.
- FABs fished under the bung at around 3 ft have been a consistent producer, particularly first thing and when the wind picks up.
- Black buzzers with silver rib performed superbly as the loch cleared, with plenty of fish intercepted in the upper layers.
- Cormorants (silver body, black wings) fished on a 3 ft midge tip caught well mid-week when the water carried colour.
- Yellow owl and Kate McLaren scored heavily on the opening days, with fish chasing hard throughout.
- Black snakes and olive patterns rounded out a varied week, confirming that a mixed fly box was the key to keeping fish coming.
- Bung tactics: yellow worm and damsel patterns fished static at 2-3 ft brought steady takes when fish were sitting just below the surface.
- When the colour came in: dark and natural-coloured patterns fished slow on a midge tip or intermediate were the answer. Moving pegs and adjusting depth made the difference.
Angler Highlights
- Robert Prentice – 29 fish. Top rod of the week, fishing a rotation of FABs, blue flash damsels and even a Kate McLaren. Outstanding fishing.
- Darren McPherson – 25 on opening day and returned later in the week for 7 more when conditions were tougher. Consistent, adaptable angling.
- Calum Parr – 14 fish on opening day, fishing a mix of methods through the day with yellow owl and blue flash damsel doing the damage.
- Colin Hay – 14 fish on a strong day, with a mix of tactics producing across the loch.
- Stephen Ross – 12 returned in a half day. Efficient, quality fishing.
- Scott Doig – 11 fish on blue flash damsels, olive patterns, black snakes and black buzzers with silver rib.
- Michael Fairweather – 8 on one visit, then returned for 4 more (1 on a black/green cats whiskers booby, 3 on cormorants with silver body and black wings, plus 4-5 pulls not connected).
- Scott Fraser – 7 fish in a solid day’s sport.
- Sandy McAllan – 7 fish.
- John Duncan – 7 fish.
- Darren McPherson & Davie Simpson – both finished on 7 on the tougher colour day, proving it was still fishable with the right adjustments.
- Gordon McGill – 6 fish.
- David Anderson – 5 on his first visit, then returned for 6 more. Consistency rewarded.
- Gilberto Tabachnick – 5 in a half day.
- Joe Giacchetto – 5 fish including a cracking brown trout of 5-6 lb on opening day.
- Timothy Watts – 4 landed and 3 lost, fish clearly taking well.
- Gavin Kirkwood – 4 fish.
- Lee Chisholm – 4 fish.
- Gordon Harper – 4 fish.
- Harris McLeod (Scottish Youth Team) – 3 landed and 4 lost. Despite the mid-week colour, Harris reported the water was perfectly fishable. Fish came on a FAB, cormorant and Ally McCoist on a 3 ft midge tip. Impressive reading of conditions from a young angler with a bright future.
- Lindsay Kirk – 3 fish on his first outing in over 20 years. Welcome back, Lindsay.
- Loïc Mayeur & Clément Pichon – visiting from France, both enjoyed several fish to the net. International guests always welcome at Wormit.
- Scott Galloway – 2 fish on the colour day.
- Jim Lang – a special mention for Jim, who had what can only be described as a heartbreaking day: 1 landed and 10 lost. The new rod is getting the blame. We have all been there, Jim.

Outlook: A typical early spring week for Fife, with some breeze mid-week settling toward the weekend. Temperatures hovering around 8-10 °C with overnight lows dipping to 2-3 °C. Some showers possible, particularly Thursday, but Saturday looks the calmest day of the week. The wind will put a useful ripple on the water for most of the week, which should keep fish moving and feeding confidently.

- Thu 12 Mar: 9 °C / 3 °C – rain showers, overcast, windy (20 mph). Sunrise 06:35 / Sunset 18:08.
- Fri 13 Mar: 8 °C / 2 °C – cloudy with sprinkles, breezy (18 mph). Sunrise 06:32 / Sunset 18:10.
- Sat 14 Mar: 9 °C / 2 °C – mostly cloudy, lighter winds (11 mph). Sunrise 06:30 / Sunset 18:13.
- Sun 15 Mar: 8 °C / 2 °C – mixed early, breaks of sun later, breezy (19 mph). Sunrise 06:27 / Sunset 18:15.
Notes & Reminders
- Peg rotation: 6 fish or 90 minutes per peg, whichever comes first, then skip one peg. Non-negotiable and designed to keep fish and anglers moving. It works.
- Rubbish: take all litter home or use the car park bin. We had an excellent opening week for this. Keep it up.
- Discarded nylon: please take all waste line home. Discarded nylon is a hazard to wildlife and a stain on any fishery.
- Fish care: barbless or debarbed hooks only for catch and release. Handle fish wet, minimise time out of the water, and photograph in the net where possible.

Opening, Pricing & Bookings
- Open: Wednesday to Sunday, dawn to dusk. Monday and Tuesday reserved for rest, maintenance and tuition.
- Day permits: £32.50 Catch & Release. Kill ticket add-on £8 per rainbow (under 5 lb).
- Rod limit: 12 rods maximum on 6 acres. With 60-70% of the bank free at all times, there is always space to fish properly.
- Booking: online booking is mandatory for day sessions.
