Summary
Wormit continues to fish well despite water levels fluctuating last week. Clarity improved steadily to around 50% opacity, before a little rain on Saturday added a further tinge again. Importantly, this was nothing dramatic; line visibility remains 2–3 feet and the water is carrying a healthy, fishable colour rather than heavy stain.
Fish have been consistently patrolling the margins. That includes tight to the bank, around the island on the far side, and right under your feet. Anglers casting straight out into open water have generally worked harder for their fish, while those fishing 45 degrees along the bank and covering the edges have been far more effective.
With water levels high, there is a lot of natural food pushed into the margins; snails, worms, and general debris. The fish are tuned into it and are holding where there is cover and shelter. The lagoon continues to fish reliably, with fish holding in the deeper water there as expected.

A largely unsettled but mild spell lies ahead, with low pressure dominating. Expect periods of rain, occasional brighter spells, and temperatures remaining comfortably above freezing throughout.

Greig’s Advice
Fish the edges.
A high amount of fish are tight to cover. Work the margins, island edges, and anywhere offering shelter rather than casting blindly into open water all the time.
Recommended Approaches:
- Bung Fishing: Eggs remain highly effective. Fish pink, darker, or natural eggs, bloodworm, red apps around 2–3ft deep. Short casts, let them sink for 20–30 seconds, then move and recast. You do not need to rush this; the takes often come as the fly settles.
- Fast Glass & Snakes: A fast glass line with a black snake has been excellent. Hothead black snakes in particular are provoking confident takes when fished steadily. Do not strip too quickly; let the fly trail naturally over weed beds.
- Washing Line / Midge Tip: A FAB or buoyant fly on the point, with cormorants and drawbacks on the droppers, is picking up fish feeding just off the deck. Midday, if fish are visibly moving, consider switching to buzzers.
- Line Choice: A fast intermediate or fast glass is as heavy as you generally need. Only move to a DI3 or similar if wind conditions demand it.
Footwear:
Water levels have been fluctuating, leaving puddling on the banks as levels drop. Wellies are essential if you want full access around the fishery.

- Scott Pozzi: 14 fish from 6 pegs, including two fish around 5–6lb. Fished close in due to injury; bloodworm 2ft under the bung was key.

- Gertrude Thomasina: 6 fish in a short 2 hour session, with 2 lost. Black snake on fast glass.

IMPORTANT: Peg Rotation & Conduct – Now Formalised
Wormit operates a 12-rod maximum to guarantee space and quality. That system only works if anglers rotate properly.
Polite guidance has not been sufficient. As a result, peg movement is now formalised and non-negotiable.
The rules are:
- 6 fish or 90 minutes per peg, whichever comes first.
- Move on and miss the next peg. Do not shuffle between neighbouring pegs.
- No side-by-side fishing.
This applies whether you are catching or not. The aim is simple: fair access, proper water coverage, and a quality experience for everyone.

Litter & Fish Care
Recent incidents of discarded rubbish, nylon, and poor fish handling are unacceptable.
- Bins are provided at the gate and car park. Take your rubbish with you.
- Keep fish wet, handle carefully, and return them promptly.
If these issues persist, I will reduce or remove day tickets in favour of a membership-only model. I do not want to do this, but I will if necessary.
Call to Action
Despite variable water levels, the fishery is fishing well and improving steadily as we move towards spring. Fish are present across the water, feeding confidently, and rewarding anglers who think and move. They are by no means giving themselves up and as such a few have struggled creating a healthy balance.
