Wormit Trout Fishery Weekly Report – w/c 27th October 2025
Autumn’s cooling down — but the fishing’s still hot. After weeks of mild air, temperatures have finally dropped, and anglers are seeing the first real bite of autumn. The water remains clear and cool, averaging around 12 °C, with fish holding high when it’s calm but dropping slightly deeper in windier spells.
Conditions have been unsettled at times, with light rain and changing winds, but sport has stayed consistent. The rod average sits between 5 fish per angler, with an average weight around 2.5 lb and plenty of fish in the 5–8 lb range keeping things interesting.
It’s very much about sink tips and intermediates when there’s a breeze, while calmer spells — particularly in the lagoon where it’s sheltered — are still seeing surface movement and fish rising freely. For the most part, it’s been about pulling fast. Pink snakes, hot-head damsels, and yellow dancers have been the standout patterns this week, though as ever, confidence and depth control are the real keys.

- Scott Thorburn – 6 fish, strong results pulling snakes through the ripple.
- Lee Chisholm – 10 fish, lost 2; “loads of action, couldn’t keep them off the fly.”
🎣 Standout Tactics
- Pulling fast: snakes, dancers, and damsels — particularly in pink, olive, and yellow — stripped at speed through the top 3 ft.
- Intermediate game: fish sitting off the drop-offs; a slow retrieve often triggers following fish to commit.
- Calm conditions: small buzzers or DBs will still work in the lagoon, but fish them confidently in the upper layers.
- Confidence flies: whatever you’re confident in, fish it with conviction. The loch’s full of fish — presentation and pace matter more than pattern.

Outlook: A more traditional late-October pattern — breezy at times, with showers through the middle of the week, turning cooler and clearer toward the weekend. Expect highs of 9–12 °C by day, dipping to 4–6 °C overnight. Water temperature ~12 °C.

💧 Fish Welfare
If you catch any smaller fish that appear damaged, poorly handled, or are not in good condition, please remove them from the water and chap them, take a picture and alert a member of staff or send an image. This applies mainly to smaller or weak fish that may not survive release. We rarely see many, but please use common sense — your help ensures the fishery stays in top condition.
💡 Owner’s Advice
- Work the conditions: intermediates and sink-tips in a breeze; floaters or tips in calm spells.
- Retrieve pace: faster is better right now — moving flies are drawing the most takes.
- Stay shallow when calm: the lagoon is producing surface activity most days.
- Fish care: barbless/de-barbed, keep fish wet, photos in the net, quick releases.
