Dry Fly Action at Last

Wormit Trout Fishery Weekly Report w/c 11th August 2025 – Cooler nights are keeping the loch at a healthy 16.5°C with 7ft visibility, and the trout are responding well to surface patterns. This week’s fishing has been dominated by aggressive takes on dry flies such as foam daddies, sedges, and yellow owls. Pulled through the ripple in sizes 12–14, these flies have triggered some spectacular rises and confident hook-ups, particularly in the first and last hours of daylight.

When the sun is high or temperatures rise in the middle of the day, switching to a washing-line presentation and getting your flies to around 4ft depth has proven highly effective. This keeps your flies in the cooler water layers where trout remain active, while still offering the movement and silhouette they want.

For visiting anglers, August at Wormit Trout Fishery offers some of the most visual sport of the season. Trout can often be seen cruising just under the surface, intercepting terrestrials and sedge emergers. The combination of warm days, cool nights, and high oxygen levels has created ideal feeding conditions.

🎯 My Setup

Lines: Full floater or 3ft midge tip.
Leader: 12–16ft (6ft to dropper, 3ft between droppers).
Flies: Foam daddies, sedges, yellow owls (12–14); washing-line with buzzers at midday.
Retrieve: Slow figure-8 or static for dries; steady draw for subsurface.
Tippet: 7.5lb Grand Max or equivalent fluoro.
Rod: 5–6 weight for finesse & turnover.

💡 Tip: If trout are sipping in calm water, try a CDC sedge with a greased leader — long, drag-free drifts are the key.
