Catch Report & Highlights
Over the past week at Wormit Trout Fishery, anglers have faced a mix of weather conditions that tested their skills and adaptability. Despite these challenges, several anglers achieved impressive catches, showcasing their expertise and perseverance. Notable performances include:
- Fred McDonald: Despite fishing only a few hours, Fred landed 10 fish and lost as many, employing a slow glass line with mini lures on a fast figure-of-eight retrieve.
- Darren McPherson: Achieved a commendable 15 fish.
- Scott Pozzi: 15 Fish for his day.
- Davie Simpson: Landed 9 fish.
- Brian Sutherland: Managed 11 fish on his recent session.
- Ryan Clark: Caught 4 fish.
- John Reid: Landed 11 fish and lost another 6
- Ian Wallace: was sitting on 6 fish each early afternoon during their last outing; it’s likely their final counts were higher.
While these numbers are respectable, the fishing hasn’t been as prolific as anticipated. Early morning cold temperatures combined with warm afternoon sun and a cold north-westerly wind have not been ideal for Wormit, leading to less active fish. However, in the last 30 days, we’ve stocked over 530 fish, supplementing an already healthy population. Once conditions stabilize, we anticipate epic sport, especially on natural patterns and dries.
Fishing Conditions & Tactics
The fluctuating weather has necessitated adaptability in tactics. Anglers have found success using:
- Slow glass/intermediate lines: Effective in cooler temperatures.
- Mini lures: Particularly when fished with a fast figure-of-eight retrieve.
- Bung Tactics: Probably doing best
- Diawl Bachs/Buzzers: Starting to do well and will just get better..
Average catch size is around 3lb with plenty fish in the 5lb region coming off including some nice blues and browns.
Current rod average is sitting at 9 fish per rod per session.

Angler’s Tip: Trout are sensitive to changes in barometric pressure due to their swim bladders, which help regulate buoyancy. Stable or slowly changing pressures often lead to consistent feeding behavior. However, rapid drops in pressure, often preceding storms, can make trout more active as they anticipate changing conditions. Conversely, rapidly rising pressures, typically following a storm, might make trout less active as they adjust to the new conditions. Monitoring these pressure trends can provide valuable insights into trout behavior and improve your angling success.
Fishery Etiquette
We always appreciate feedback, both positive and constructive. One concern was raised about last weekend’s fishing, where some anglers found themselves struggling while others were catching consistently in a concentrated area.
A few reminders on good angling etiquette at Wormit:

Rotation & Fair Play: If you’re catching consistently in a hot spot, consider moving to allow others a chance. A small change of location could make a big difference.

Fishing Advice: If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to chat with fellow anglers or the team for tips. Sometimes, a minor tweak in fly choice or depth can turn a blank day into a great session.

Conditions Matter: Some days, certain areas will fish better due to wind direction and temperature. We do our best to ensure a balanced fishery, and our restocking practices help spread the action out.

Dispose of Waste Properly: Take all discarded nylon (fishing line) and cigarette ends home or place them in the bin outside the gate. Discarded fishing lines can entangle wildlife, and cigarette butts contain toxins harmful to aquatic life.

Avoid Littering: Ensure all trash, including food wrappers and packaging, is disposed of correctly to prevent pollution and harm to wildlife.

Catch and Release Best Practices
Ensuring the health and sustainability of our fish population is a shared responsibility. We kindly remind all anglers to adhere to the following catch and release guidelines:

Keep the Fish in the Water: Whenever possible, avoid removing the fish from the water. Handling fish in water reduces stress and potential injury.

Use a Landing Net: Utilize a rubber or non-abrasive landing net to minimize harm to the fish’s protective slime layer.

Minimize Handling: Handle the fish as little as possible and only with wet hands to preserve its protective slime layer.

Use Barbless Hooks: Employ barbless hooks or press down the barb on a barbed hook to facilitate easier release and reduce injury.

Quick Hook Removal: Use a hook removal tool if necessary, and dehook the fish in the water whenever possible. If the hook is deeply swallowed and cannot be easily removed, cut the line as close to the hook as possible.

Limit Air Exposure: If you must remove the fish from the water, keep air exposure to a minimum—ideally under 60 seconds. Even better, take the picture while holding the fish right over or in the water.

Support Recovery: Hold the fish gently in the water, facing upstream, until it swims away under its own power.

Easter Weekend Opening Hours – Book online now.
We are pleased to announce that Wormit Trout Fishery will be open throughout the Easter weekend and will have a bumper stocking earlier that week:
- Thursday, 17th April: Open from dawn till dusk.
- Good Friday, 18th April: Open from dawn till dusk.
- Saturday, 19th April: Open from dawn till dusk.
- Easter Sunday, 20th April: Open from dawn till dusk.
- Easter Monday, 21st April: Open from dawn till dusk.
This extended opening provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy spring fishing during the holiday period. We look forward to welcoming both regular and new anglers to experience the vibrant atmosphere and productive waters.
April Price Adjustment
After careful consideration and balancing operational costs with our commitment to providing excellent value, we will be implementing a price adjustment effective from 1st April 2025. The new pricing is as follows:
- Full-Day Fishing: £29.50 (previously £35.00)
This adjustment reflects a £5.50 reduction from the initially planned increase, ensuring that we continue to offer great value. Anglers can enjoy fishing from dawn till dusk, making it a cost-effective way to spend a day at Wormit Trout Fishery.
Booking Availability
We have the following rod availability for the upcoming week:
- Thursday: Rods available.
- Saturday: Only 6 rods left.
- Sunday: Rods available.
For those wishing to fish outside these days (e.g., shift workers), please call or text/WhatsApp us to arrange your session. The current rate is £25 per day (dawn till dusk, catch and release).
